Lagardère puts long-serving Segal in charge of North American division
The Lagardère Sports agency has promoted Joel Segal, the highly-regarded NFL American football agent, to chief executive of its North American division.
Segal, who had been president of team sports at the agency since May 2016, will carry on as president of football, and will continue to lead that division as before.
Lagardère said Segal will “bring the expertise in building a successful football representation business to the rest of the agency’s operations.”
Segal has been in charge of the agency’s NFL player representation operations since 2010.
According to Forbes, he has 78 NFL players as clients, and has negotiated around $1.2 billion worth of present contracts.
Lagardère has been in discussions with potential buyers for its sports division for several months now, in order to focus on its core operations of publishing and travel retail in a new strategy.
It was reported in July that the group was in exclusive talks with Wasserman over the sale of Lagardère Sports, but Sportcal now understands the US sports marketing and talent management agency is no longer actively seeking that deal.
Last month, Arnaud Lagardère, general and managing partner of the group, said: “We will be focusing on making the disposals at the right time, at the right price.”
