Ajax and Veronica win again in the Champions League
Another Uefa Champions League match for Ajax produced another record for Veronica as the Talpa Network-owned Dutch free-to-air commercial channel broke the 3.8-million audience barrier last night.
Ajax's 1-0 away victory over England's Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final, first-leg of Europe's elite clubs competition drew a total TV audience in the Netherlands of over 4.1 million.
The game in London, which kicked-off at 9pm (CET), was watched by 3.855 million viewers on Veronica, a record for the channel, and an additional 278,000 people on subscription offering Ziggo Sport, the cable and telecoms operator.
Veronica's preview show and post-game analysis recorded viewership of 1.7 million and 979,000, respectively.
Ajax's unlikely run to the semi-final of the Champions League has generated record ratings for Veronica.
The shock 2-1 win over Juventus in Italy in the quarter-final, second leg last month was watched by 3.7 million viewers of the channel, after the first-leg 1-1 draw had attracted 3.5 million. Both were records at the time they were set.
Veronica and Ziggo Sport share Champions League rights in the Netherlands until the end of the 2020-21 campaign.
Yesterday's game was shown in the UK by pay-TV's BT Sport, but the channel rarely releases audience figures.
The return leg takes place in Amsterdam on 8 May.
Barcelona host Liverpool this evening in the first leg of the other semi-final.Sportcal
