Veronica nets record audience for Ajax-Juventus clash
Veronica, the Talpa Network-owned Dutch free-to-air commercial channel, drew a record audience of 3.5 million viewers for the Uefa Champions League quarter-final clash between Ajax and Juventus on Wednesday evening.
The game in Amsterdam, which kicked off at 9pm (CET) and finished 1-1, dominated the night for Veronica, with NOS Journaal, the news programme of the Dutch public-service broadcaster, in second place with 1.69 million viewers.
The 3.5 million viewers are nearly 1 million more than Veronica attained for Ajax's 4-2 win against Real Madrid in the last 16, second leg.Wednesday's pre-match coverage drew an audience of 998,000, with 1.45 million people staying tuned in for the post-match analysis. The two teams meet again in Turin next Tuesday.
Veronica holds Champions League rights in the Netherlands until the end of the 2020-21 season, along with Ziggo Sport, the Dutch telecoms and cable operator.
In 2015, sister network SBS became the first Dutch free-to-air commercial broadcaster to show live Champions League coverage since the tournament’s inception in 1992. SBS switched the Champions League coverage from SBS6 to Veronica ahead of the 2016-17 season.
Strict listed events legislation in both Belgium and the Netherlands ensures coverage of the respective market’s teams on free-to-air television and have prevented the Team Marketing agency from awarding more exclusivity to pay-TV operators.
