Spanish soccer's LaLiga has officially launched LaLigaSportsTV, its in-house over-the-top service, offering free live streaming of a range of domestic sports events.

The service is available on tablets, mobile phones and smart TVs, and is aimed at boosting the visibility and exposure of all Spanish sport.

LaLiga said that while the live action will be available throughout Spain, it will additionally be carried on catch-up internationally, subject to local rights restrictions.

The LaLigaSportsTV app is available in eight languages (English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russia and Indonesian) for smartphone and tablet, while the smart TV service can be accessed in English and Spanish.

LaLiga launched the service, which has a budget of €3 million ($3.4 million) per year, as LaLiga4Sports, in 2016 to provide coverage of sports that do not necessarily enjoy wide exposure on television through a mixture of live action, highlights, features and news.

There are 20 sport-specific channels, covering the likes of canoeing, handball, basketball, eSports, field hockey, triathlon, water polo and soccer (highlights from the top-tier LaLiga Santander and live coverage, via a paid subscription, to the second-tier LaLiga 1|2|3.

In the coming days and weeks, themed channels for Basque pelota, cycling, fencing, mountain climbing, pétanque and sailing will be added to the service.

Any sports that do not have their own channel will be be offered coverage via a general channel called LaLigaSports.

Speaking at yesterday's launch event, Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, said: "The aim is to offer less high-profile sports greater and improved visibility via a platform where content is quickly and easily accessible, allowing fans to enjoy their favourite sport wherever, whenever and however they want."

Jose Hidalgo, president of the Spanish Sports Association (ADESP), added: "LaLigaSportsTV is a platform that will bring about a digital transformation and will offer exposure to the work carried out by each of the Spanish sporting federations."
