Asian Games launches campaign for suggestions from public about new sports
The Asian Games has launched a new campaign, #NextAtAsianGames, to encourage people around the world to suggest sports they would like to see included in future editions of the games.
Suggestions can be posted via participants’ own social media profiles on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, using the hashtag #NextAtAsianGames.
The Olympic Council of Asia said that the sport(s) “which receives maximum submissions will be considered to be included in the future Asian Games.”
It added: “This campaign will also be supported by eminent sports personalities and International Olympic officials.”
Last year’s Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang in Indonesia featured 58 sporting disciplines, including 10 new sports and disciplines - pencak silat, bridge, sambo, kurash, rollersports, ju-jitsu, rock climbing, paragliding, jet skiing and 3x3 basketball.
The new process compares with the International Olympic Committee’s strategy for refreshing its sports programme by allowing host cities a say in the make-up of the programme for the first time.
The next edition of the Asian Games are in Hangzhou, China in 2022.
