Real Sociedad fans vote against betting sponsorship
Real Sociedad look set to remain the only club in Spanish soccer's LaLiga without a betting sponsor after fans voted against the proposal.
In a survey held from Tuesday to Thursday last week, 5,715 of the 6,638 voting supporters of the Basque team, or 86 per cent of the total, were opposed to the concept.
Jokin Aperribay, the president of Real Sociedad, said last week that the club had received sponsorship proposals from betting companies, but wanted to gauge the opinion of its fanbase before considering them.
The consultation was non-binding, but the leadership is expected to accept the result of the poll, and not enter negotiations with potential sponsors in the sector.
Real Sociedad do not currently have a shirt sponsor but it is reported that they did receive an offer from Betway, the online betting company, for this season worth between €2 million ($2.3 million) and €2.5 million.
The firm did agree new shirt sponsorship deals with other LaLiga clubs in Alavés, Leganés and Levante.
