QNB to get exclusive branding on female athletes' bibs in IAAF deal
A sponsorship deal signed in July by the IAAF, athletics’ world governing body, and QNB, the Qatari commercial bank headquartered in Doha, will include exclusive branding for QNB on all female athlete bibs competing at the Doha 2019 World Athletics Championships, the IAAF has revealed.
The partnership was first unveiled in July, at an IAAF Council meeting in Buenos Aires.
Under the terms of the four-year deal, QNB will support all of the IAAF’s top-tier World Athletic Series Events from 1 January 2019 to the end of 2022, including the next two IAAF World Athletics Championships – the 2021 edition in Eugene, Oregon as well as Doha 2019 – plus the IAAF World Relays in Yokohama, Japan and the IAAF World Cross Country Championship in Aarhus next year.
Events covered by the deal in 2020 include: the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China; the IAAF Half Marathon in Gdynia, Poland; the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in Minsk, Belarus; and the World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
Sebastian Coe, the IAAF’s president, said: “It is always exciting to be signing new partnerships and taking the sport of athletics to new organisations, their customers and stakeholders. This partnership, in particular, is rewarding as QNB is the largest financial institution in the Middle East and Africa with a global presence and a strong vision for growth across the region as well as a stated desire to promote and encourage the health and wellbeing of communities in which it operates.
“New partners also bring new ideas and new thinking and we look forward to the contribution and involvement of QNB in our sport. We are already talking to them about their financial security expertise, their strong culture of customer service and their commitment to youth, education and sustainability. There are many aspects to their business that will help to enhance and promote athletics across the region and the world.”
The deal represents a breakout for the IAAF, whose existing three worldwide partners are all Japanese companies - Asics, Seiko and TDK.
