NBA top but soccer predominates in new sponsorship impact chart
The NBA is the most powerful brand in world sport, according to the new POWA index, a real-time sponsorship evaluation engine that claims to chart the commercial impact of rights-holders.
The North American basketball league has the number-one spot in a top 20 that also includes the NFL, MLB and 14 of the world’s top soccer clubs, leagues and competitions.
The POWA index takes into account elements such as profile, traditional and digital media coverage and social media interaction to determine the value of a league, team or other rights owner to a sponsor, and the figures are being constantly updated.
As of today, the NBA had a score of 97,628, giving it a comfortable lead over Spanish soccer giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, and the NFL, with the top five rounded out by England’s Premier League.
The 2018-19 NBA season gets under way next Tuesday.
There are five Premier League clubs in the POWA index chart, led by Manchester United, in sixth place, plus other prominent soccer properties in the Uefa Champions League, in seventh, and Spain’s LaLiga, in eighth.
The only representatives from outside soccer and North America’s major leagues are Formula 1, in 16th place, and cricket’s Indian Premier League, one place further back.
The only US major league team to make the list is the NFL’s New England Patriots, in 20th place.
