Pirelli switches sponsorship to Luna Rossa from Emirates Team New Zealand
Pirelli, the Italian tyre manufacturer, has agreed a deal to sponsor Luna Rossa, the Italian team challenging for the next edition of sailing’s America’s Cup in Auckland New Zealand in 2021, switching from Emirates Team New Zealand, which it sponsored at last year’s edition of the race in Bermuda.
Pirelli, a long-time sports sponsor, is the sole supplier of tyres in Formula 1 motor racing.
Marco Tronchetti Provera, the company’s executive vice-president and chief executive, said: “Pirelli chose to be a part of this project because it represents both a sporting and technological challenge, able to bring Italy and the Pirelli brand to the attention of the entire world.
“The America’s Cup, as Formula 1 is to motorsport, is the most prestigious sailing competition, with a great history and tradition. It embodies values and is for a public of impassioned fans that perfectly match Pirelli’s.”
Confirmed entrants for the America’s Cup are: Emirates Team New Zealand, the holders; Luna Rossa, the privileged ‘challenger of record’; Ineos Team UK of Great Britain; American Magic of USA; and a second Italian entry, Sardinia Challenge.
It is reported that a second entry from USA and a Norwegian syndicate are also a possibility.
