FIL adopts new strategic plan as it eyes Olympic place for lacrosse
Meanwhile, the structure of FIL world events will change, with entries limited to 30 teams. A qualifying system at the continental level for FIL world events was also put in place.
Five new sports will join the programme for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics - baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing - after the International Olympic Committee for the first time allowed host cities to have a say in the sports included on the programme.
Earlier this year, Fiona Clark, executive director of the Asia-Pacific Lacrosse Union and former president of the International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations, claimed that lacrosse would target possible inclusion on the programme of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, but must first decide whether to adopt the non-contact version of the game mainly played by women, or the men’s contact version.
Clark told the South China Morning Post: “We have been recognised as a sport by the World Games and we’ve just heard that we have been accepted in 2021 in Birmingham, Alabama – both men’s and women’s – which is extremely positive.”
In relation to the Olympics, Clark said: “[Tokyo 2020] is too soon and we’ll probably miss [Paris] 2024. Realistically, we’re looking at 2028.”
Lacrosse was a medal sport in early editions of the modern Olympics, in 1904 and 1908, and a demonstration sport in 1948.Sportcal
