Now F1 agrees rights extension deal with Finland's MTV
Formula 1 today announced a three-year extension of its media rights deal with MTV, the Finnish commercial broadcaster, under which the network will continue to broadcast live coverage of the series until 2021.
In addition to Formula 1 races, MTV will broadcast live all of the events of the FIA Formula 2 Championship and GP3 Series (from 2019 onwards to be renamed FIA Formula 3 Championship) for the next three years.
Formula 1, which said that the deal applies to all MTV platforms, added: “As part of this deal, MTV will be providing broader and deeper F1 content than ever before. All Grand Prix weekends will still be covered live on C More. In addition, MTV also will offer viewers a range of new content as well as the opportunity to tailor content according to their preferences.”
The deal follows last week’s news that the Nordic Entertainment Group had renewed its exclusive Formula 1 rights deal in the other Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden for three more seasons.
The deal includes every practice session, qualifying session and race in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons to be shown live on a combination of NENT Group’s Viaplay streaming service and its free-to-air TV and pay-TV channels.
NENT Group said it would also collaborate with Formula 1 on its new OTT subscription service, F1 TV, which launched ahead of last month's Spanish Grand Prix. NENT Group said it would offer F1 TV from the start of the 2019 season at the latest, providing extended coverage and in-depth race information.
Jarkko Nordlund, MTV’s chief executive, said today: “MTV has been a close partner of F1 since the 1980s, so we are delighted to announce this continuation. Among our C More customers, F1 is the most popular form of content. Therefore, we are very happy to keep improving both the sport itself and our delivery of it.”
Ian Holmes, director of media rights at Formula 1, added: “I am delighted we have agreed to extend our relationship with MTV for a further three years. They are a long-time partner and by far the most established media company in Finland. They are able to offer comprehensive coverage across different channels and platforms. Their production and presentation is first rate and we look forward to further developing the scope of their content offering to help continue to attract new fans and satisfy the existing audience who represent some of the most knowledgeable fans we have anywhere in the world.”
