Sky to build third technology centre to focus on innovation including VR
Sky, the UK-based pay-TV giant, is to build a dedicated innovation centre at its west London headquarters, which aims to focus on broadcast and streaming innovations, including virtual reality technology.
The facility, Sky’s third innovation centre after ones in Leeds in the UK and Milan in Italy, will offer girls of school-leaving age the opportunity to train as computer coders free of charge.
Jeremy Darroch, group chief executive of Sky, said: "Sky customers have always enjoyed cutting edge technology and the best products available - from satellite to streaming, Sky has led the way. The launch of this dedicated innovation centre will enable us to push the boundaries even further."
Last year, Sky Deutschland, Sky’s German pay-TV broadcaster, teamed up with electronics giant Sony to provide virtual reality coverage of soccer’s Uefa Champions League final.
Sky Deutschland offered Sony 'PlayStation Plus' subscribers with a PS VR headset free access to its coverage of the game, which took place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
