RFU alumnus Chignell reunites with Goldschmidt at WSL
World Surf League, the organiser of the annual tour of professional competitions, has appointed Will Chignell as its chief marketing officer.
The move reignites Chignell with WSL chief executive Sophie Goldschmidt, with the two having worked together at the Rugby Football Union during the organisation of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
In his new role, based in Santa Monica, California, Chignell will oversee global marketing, brand, social media, PR and communications. He joins WSL at a period of development for surfing as the sport prepares to make its debut at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
Chignell was previously chief marketing and communications officer at the America's Cup Event Authority, the organiser of sailing's blue riband America's Cup, the 35th edition of which took place in Bermuda last year.
He left his role as head of communications at the RFU in April 2016, four months after Goldschmidt quit as chief commercial and marketing officer to join CSM Sport & Entertainment, the UK-based sports marketing company, as group managing director.
Goldschmidt joined WSL in July 2017, and a month later the surfing organisation made another high-profile appointment in recruiting Joe Carr, the UFC’s senior vice-president of international and content, to the post of chief strategy officer and head of international.
Goldschmidt said: "Will is a proven and respected leader in the marketing and communications arena, with broad experience across the world, in many events, in a variety of sports. As chief marketing officer, he was instrumental in the success of the compelling, profitable America's Cup last year, which WSL can learn from as we look forward. The future is bright for WSL and the sport surfing in the coming years."
