Garmin action cameras to relay Volvo Ocean Race
Garmin, the US technology company, will make possible enhanced video coverage of sailing’s forthcoming Volvo Ocean Race, after being unveiled as an official supplier of the event.
Garmin will be providing its flagship VIRB 360 and VIRB Ultra 30 waterproof action cameras to all seven teams to enable on-board reporters to shoot video that will appear on digital platforms and can be enjoyed by fans across the globe
The 2017-18 race, which visits 12 cities and covers more than 70,000 kilometres, starts in Alicante in Spain on 22 October.
Garmin is best known in sport as a provider of GPS technology and sponsor of various teams in cycling.
David Dunn, the director of marine sales at Garmin, said: “Our VIRB action cameras are rugged and ready for adventure, just like the sailors taking part in this race, and we’re confident race fans watching the footage at home will get to experience the sport they love like never before.”
Jordi Neves, the chief digital officer of the Volvo Ocean Race, added: “This is a fantastic partnership for the race and we are looking forward to working with such a dynamic and innovative brand. We are especially excited to be able to deliver 360 experiences from all boats by our on-board reporters that will be delivering the story of the race in the toughest conditions.”
The agreement was announced on the occasion of the prologue leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, a non-scoring element intended to help the teams fine-tune their preparations for the main event.
