Volleyball Federation Keeps Close Eye on SARS
The International Volleyball Federation announced on Friday that while closely monitoring the situation regarding the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), there were no immediate plans to cancel any of the many international competitions on the 2003 volleyball calendar.
'Our Medical Commission officers are monitoring the SARS situation carefully and responsibly,' said FIVB General Manager Mr. Jean-Pierre Seppey. 'The situation concerning this syndrome could change as rapidly as it occurred, so we will retain the status quo. We will act responsibly and according to the situation as it presents itself prior to each individual competition,' he added.
Mr. Seppey underlined that the FIVB bore the responsibility of making the correct decision according to the actual circumstances. 'We have a responsibility to our organizers and host countries, and above all to our athletes, who have devoted themselves to preparing for these important international competitions.'
The General Manager said the FIVB would make no rash decisions, but instead would take all aspects into consideration, while at the same time consulting with their own Medical Commission members and the World Health Organization (WHO), based in Geneva, Switzerland.
'As we always have when planning international competitions, we will always have a contingency plan to activate if circumstances prevent us from going ahead with a particular competition,' Mr. Seppey said. ‘We live in turbulent times and as far as it is possible, we must carry on with our planning and staging of competitions as normal.'
