UCI Signs Partnership Agreement with Peace and Sport

Cycling - 06 Apr 2011

The International Cycling Union (UCI) today signed a partnership agreement with the organisation Peace and Sport. The signing ceremony took place during the SportAccord Convention being held in London from April 3rd to 8th. This agreement represents a joint effort between the UCI and Peace and Sport to, through cycling, set up actions for the promotion of peace in vulnerable regions.

Peace and Sport is an international organisation that uses sport to bring communities together and encourage dialogue. With the signing of this agreement, the UCI commits itself to offer help with equipment, technical resources and its experience in order to bring to fruition concrete actions that, through the practice of cycling, will help with the education and integration of young people in difficulty.

According to the UCI President Mr Pat McQuaid: “This partnership with Peace and Sport is an extension of the UCI’s fundamental mission: develop cycling throughout the world and at all levels. Cycling, with its values of effort, character building, well-being and fair-play, is an appropriate sport for encouraging the education and integration of thousands of youngsters in difficult situations throughout the world. More widely, cycling, its practice and the passion it evokes bring together communities in difficulty. We are delighted to participate in Peace and Sport’s action to use cycling in order to tighten social links.”

Mr Joël Bouzou, President of Peace and Sport, added: “The partnership which now unites Peace and Sport and the UCI will definitely be very fruitful. It is perfectly in keeping with our international organisation’s approach which campaigns to ensure that the sporting and political decision makers pool their resources, their experience and their abilities to help vulnerable communities find a balance thanks to sport. The UCI has shown that it is sensitive to this thinking and wishes to commit itself to concrete actions. Certain cycling disciplines are particularly adapted to the environment of the zones in which we work. Together, we will rapidly set up pilot programmes to encourage integration, cooperation and solidarity within vulnerable populations.
