TVNZ To Broadcast The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games In New Zealand
This continues TVNZ’s long history of involvement as the New Zealand broadcaster of every Commonwealth Games since television coverage first began in 1966 from Jamaica.
Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation Chairman, Mr Ronald Walker today said the deal was ‘a great deal for everyone involved’.
“It is the most significant broadcast investment ever made with New Zealand for the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Walker said.
“The deal provides a wonderful opportunity for New Zealanders to watch next year’s Commonwealth Games,”
The Games will be broadcast on TVNZ’s market leading TV1, with additional coverage on TV2. Over 130 hours of coverage will be broadcast, the majority of which will be live.
“This translates to a lot of exciting television over 12 days,” Mr Walker said.
TVNZ Chief Executive Officer Ian Fraser said “The decision is testament to our expertise as a broadcaster of major live multi-sport events.
“We also understand how important it is for New Zealanders to have the chance to receive the maximum possible coverage of New Zealand athletes and be witness to their success.”
TVNZ said its 2006 coverage of the Games will be particularly exciting due to the venue’s close time zone.
Mr Walker said the TVNZ deal was also a great opportunity to showcase Melbourne and Victoria to a New Zealand audience in the lead up to and during the Games.
The agreement gives TVNZ television and radio rights to the Commonwealth Games across all platforms in New Zealand.
As it has successfully done in Manchester and Athens, TVNZ has also agreed to make available multiple, fully produced feeds for use by other Melbourne 2006 rights holders. This service will help ensure the Games action reaches all corners of the Commonwealth.
More than 4500 elite athletes from 71 nations will gather in Melbourne to take part in the XVIII Commonwealth Games.
The event is also expected to attract a global television audience in excess of one billion people. The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will be held from 15-26 March 2006. For further information on the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, go to http://www.melbourne2006.com.au/.
