'The new friends of the Giants'
At the McAlpine Stadium today it was announced that Friends Provident, the leading financial services organisation, is the new sponsor of Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants Rugby League Club for 2000.
Tony Barnes, Managing Director of Retail Operations, commented: 'We are delighted to be the new sponsor of the Giants as they embark on an exciting phase of their development in the Super League. To be making the announcement today at this magnificant stadium in Huddersfield, the birthplace of rugby league, is very special indeed. The North is a vibrant and important contributor to Friends Providents business operations and has played a major role in the very impressive growth we have achieved in 1999 and in recent years. For Friends Provident Yorkshire has a unique place in our history as it was the very county in which our now substantial business was founded in 1832.
Our corporate identity bears the Yorkshire rose in a modern form and we are delighted that the Giants will be competing with such a powerful symbol emblazoned on their club shirts.
I believe that our partnership with the Giants will be a successful one as we share many common values. We are both ambitious to be the best and share the goal of delivering good value to our customers and working closely with the communities in which we operate. We wish the Giants great success and will be working closely with them to give them our full support and to build greater awareness of the Friends Provident name.'
Giants Chief Executive Ralph Rimmer was equally as excited about the partnership with the major UK financial institution.
'It's a massive boost for the Giants and Super League to attract sponsorship from such a major player in the financial world as Friends Provident. I am very confident that together we can build both our brand images and the partnership has massive potential. Our partnership with Friends Provident will develop as the season progresses and will involve branding, promotional and possible community based initiatives. Therefore, we are unable to put an exact figure on the sponsorship but we estimate that the total commitment will reach รบ100,000.'
The Friends Provident name and logo will be displayed on the newly designed principle and alternative shirts. The principle shirt is claret with gold hoops, white shorts and white socks with claret and gold turnovers. The alternative shirt is white with a red and blue chevron, the shorts are white and the socks white with red and blue turnovers. These designs were agreed in partnership with Friends Provident and give maximum exposure to the sponsor as well as retaining the traditional values of the Huddersfield and Sheffield clubs.
