Swimming: Making green waves in Denmark

Swimming - 05 Dec 2013

The LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships are in all ways a historic event in Denmark. The temporary pools are recycled from the London Olympic Games and the World Championships in Barcelona. After the event parts of the pools once again will be recycled locally - this time as an upgrade of the swimming pool in the host city, Herning.

When the world class swimmers jump into the pool at LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in the multi flexible arena, Jyske Bank BOXEN, in Herning next week, it will be in a temporary pool, where parts of the pool previously have previously been at the Olympics in London 2012 and in the World Championships in Barcelona.

And when the last swimmer left the pool, parts of the pool will be recycled within the local swimming pool in the host city Herning as an upgrade the indoor swimming pool with a new 50 meter pool.

- When we 4-5 years ago first started planning the multi flexible arena, Jyske Bank BOXEN , one of the wildest ideas were to be able to one day host an international swimming competition. The dream has finally come true with the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships. There is a great story in the recycling of the pools from the Olympic Games in London and the World Championships in Barcelona. And even greater that the pools once again will be recycled for the benefit of the citizens and the local pool, says Johannes Poulsen, committee chairman, Sport & Culture, City of Herning.

- The LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in Herning create a green wave . The temporary pools are recycling from the Olympic pool in London, and parts will be recycled back to Herning for the permanent 50 meter pool. This creative and sustainable thinking is healthy and good and will inspire other major international sports events in Denmark, says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.

Specifically, the EUROSWIM 2013 pool panels will be reused in the new 50m pool in Herning and the pool is expected to open in 2015.

Sport Event Denmark operates in close cooperation with the event rights holder, the local organising committee and the host city. This means an active involvement all the way from the vital bidding process, to the careful event planning and marketing until the event is successfully delivered. Very importantly, Sport Event Denmark recognizes the importance of adding value to an event and its owner and always strive do its utmost to exceed the expectations of all stakeholders. In this capacity Sport Event Denmark will also ensure that lessons learned from Herning and the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships will provide green swells to future sporting events in Denmark.

Editor’s note

2013 LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships will be staged from 12th-15th of December 2013.

673 swimmers from 42 nations have been entered by number.

The Danish Team consists of 29 swimmers – the largest team ever for a senior championship.

The championships are organized by The Danish Swimming Federation. Sport Event Denmark and The City of Herning partner the event.
