Super League Clubs Back Promotion and Relegation

Rugby league - 16 Jul 2004

Tetley's Rugby Super League clubs have voted to support the principle of continuing promotion and relegation after agreeing that two clubs should be relegated from the Super League competition at the end of the 2005 season to enable French club Perpignan's admission to the competition in 2006.

The Super League clubs considered the situation at their meeting in Wakefield on Wednesday and added their weight to the proposition that had been unanimously supported by the National League clubs at their meeting in Gateshead on Tuesday.

The recommendation will ensure that, contrary to speculation, besides two clubs being relegated from the Super League in 2005 that the winner of the National League One Grand Final will, subject to meeting the criteria laid down for admission to the elite competition, be promoted.
