Strong Line-up announced for Sports Law and Business 2015
Sports Law and Business 2015 is set to feature a prestigious panel of experts for this year’s seminar on 21 April.
Hosted by Management Forum Ltd at London’s Cavendish Hotel, the event will examine some of the key legal areas affecting the sports industry.
Sky Sport’s Senior Legal Advisor, Allana Smith, will discuss crucial commercial and legal issues in bidding for and acquiring major sports broadcast rights. Smith has worked with a wide range of sports and agencies, such as the ECB, UEFA, NFL, WWE, Rugby Super League, Augusta National and the Ladies European Tour, as well as acting as legal counsel for Fox Sports Australia.
Manchester United’s Director of Legal & Business Affairs, Patrick Stewart, is well placed to put forward a major rights holders’ perspective on strategies for exploiting commercial rights in the modern era. Stewart’s responsibilities for United include negotiating key sponsorship and image rights deals and overseeing the handling of the club’s legal and brand protection issues, sure to be reflected in his presentation’s focus on areas including player image rights, partnership exclusivity, the increasing prominence of digital and social media rights and future proofing deals.
A session considering the pros and cons of the possible approaches to dispute resolution will be hosted by 4 New Square barrister Daniel Saoul. With a practice focussed on sports law and commercial disputes, Saoul was recently selected amongst the leading barristers under 10 years’ call by Legal Week, in its annual “Stars at the Bar” report; he also sits on Sport Resolutions’ Panel of Arbitrators and the Lawn Tennis Association’s Disciplinary Panel and is a director of the British Association for Sport and Law.
The final presentation will consider all aspects of staging major sporting events, from the initial tender process and evaluation of host bids, through selecting venues, ticketing policies and selling commercial rights, to delivering the event itself. The presentation will have a particular focus on the Rugby World Cup 2015, and will be given by Angus Bujalski, Head of Legal for Rugby Football Union.
He and his team are responsible for supporting the RFU’s commercial programme, including sponsorship, broadcasting and events, at Twickenham Stadium and elsewhere.
The seminar will end with a drinks reception, giving attendees the opportunity to network.
