Sports Law & Business

Business - 21 Dec 2004

Legal, Commercial, Practical and Tactical
22nd & 23rd February 2005, The Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, London

Senior representatives from major international companies, agencies, sports clubs, media and broadcasting companies and governing bodies will, together with their legal experts, meet at C5’s Sports Law & Business conference on Sport 22nd and 23rd February 2005 in London to discuss the commercial and regulatory issues that arise in the world of sport.

Sport is big business. For rights holders, the opportunities to make money are more numerous and diverse than ever before, especially in sponsorship, broadcasting and new media. In football, the premier league, the champions league and the world cup are watched by a global audience of millions. Cricket and rugby are more popular than ever before. Athlete transfer fees can run into tens of millions and the athletes themselves have in some cases a status similar to that of film stars.

With success comes exposure, notoriety and responsibility. The FA’s disciplinary rules and procedures have been placed under the media microscope. Race fixing allegations have rocked the horseracing world. Drugs too are a huge concern – Rio, Mutu, Rusedski and the 2004 Olympic scandals come to mind.

Delegates will hear from some of the most high profile experts in the field, including senior representatives from Adidas, SFX, Chelsea, Octagon CSI, Sky Sports, BBC Sport, Sportev and Manchester United. From the governing bodies we have representatives from the BOA, the ECB, the ICC, ASA, IMS, the FA, RFU, FIFA and from the European Commission. The SDRP and Sporting Integrity are represented as are the top legal experts.

Main conference topics are:

· Negotiating athlete contracts
· Sponsorship, partnerships and ambush marketing
· Broadcasting rights: tips and traps for buyers and sellers
· The latest media and technology profit opportunities
· Drugs, ethics, privacy and conduct: regulatory and governance issues
· The recent developments and current trends in disciplinary proceedings
· Sport and competition law
· The football transfer system
· Conflicts in the sports sector
