$500,000 Start To NZC Tsunami Relief Fund Effort

Cricket - 24 Jan 2005

The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) Tsunami Relief Fund raised more than $500,000 in the first of three matches between the BLACKCAPS and the FICA World XI at Jade Stadium in Christchurch today.

A total of $506, 233 was generated, including $119, 360 from the government, who sponsored every run, four and six scored in the match.

BLACKCAPS captain Stephen Fleming cashed in with a total of 106 runs from 57 balls, including 10 fours worth $1000 and nine sixes worth $5000.

At-ground collections, an 0800 line, text donations, sponsored catches and auction bids all contributed to the half-million dollar tally.

NZC chief executive, Martin Snedden, described the day’s collection as a good start towards the targeted $1 million Tsunami Relief Fund effort.

“The generosity of New Zealanders has once again been evident and we are thrilled to be able to provide an opportunity for people to contribute to the Relief Fund,” he said.

Proceeds from the NZC Tsunami Relief Fund will be donated to World Vision and Cricket Aid, the Sri Lanka Cricket relief initiative.
