Baumann to Succeed Stankovic as FIBA Secretary General

Mr Patrick Baumann was today appointed by the Central Board of FIBA. His term of office, as the new Secretary General of FIBA, will begin on 1st January 2003.

Born in Basel, Switzerland, the 35 year old has served as Deputy Secretary General of FIBA since 1995. Mr Baumann has been involved in Basketball in his native Switzerland and in Italy as a player and as a referee. He speaks five languages, he is married and has one daughter.

He earned a law degree at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland and is an MBA graduate of the Business School of the University of Chicago. He was a member of the IOC evaluation committee for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Mr Baumann said : 'This is a great honour but at the same t ime a huge challenge for me. I will succeed one of the greatest sports’ leaders the world has ever seen and I will certainly try to follow in the footsteps Mr Borislav Stankoviæ has left over the last 27 years as Secretary General of FIBA. I will do my utmost to build on the
rich tradition of FIBA’s 70 year history and will, at the same time, try to bring new ideas and a new impetus to FIBA’s organisaton.'

Mr Borislav Stankoviæ will cease his role as Secretary General at the end of this year. The Central Board has appointed him as Secretary General Emeritus of FIBA as of
1st January 2003. Mr Stankoviæ said: 'I am very confident that we have put FIBA’s future in good hands with the appointment of Mr Baumann. I have worked very closely with him over the past 7 years and I cannot imagine a better successor for this demanding and challenging position.'

The Central Board has also appointed the various Commissions and Councils of FIBA. All the members of the Commissions will be communicated in a separate press
release.

Commission for International Competitions: Mr Ruben Rábano, Argentina
Commission for Women’s Basketball: Ms Yannick Souvré, France
Commission for Youth Basketball: Mr Jim Tooley, USA
Commission for Legal Matters: Mr Ken Madsen, Australia
Appeals’ Commission: Mr Antonio Mizzi, Malta
Finance Council: Mr Richard Baillif, Switzerland
Medical Council: Dr Jacques Huguet, France
Council for Basketball for Persons with a Disability: Mr Jan Berteling, Netherlands
Media Council: Mr Noah Klieger, Israel
