Sochi 2014 Attend IIHF Championship in Quest for Excellence

Ice hockey - 22 May 2006

A delegation from Sochi 2014 is in Riga to study event’s organization

Riga, Latvia, May 19, 2006 – A delegation from Sochi 2014 arrived in Riga, Latvia, today to study firsthand the best practices of the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship, at the invitation of the event’s organizers.

Vyacheslav Fetisov, the Minister of Sports, is heading the delegation, which also includes Dmitry Chernyshenko, CEO of the Sochi 2014 Bid Committee, and Elena Anikina, Chairwoman of the board of the Sochi 2014 Bid Committee.

Sochi 2014 will use this opportunity to discuss their plans and gain valuable insights from the IIHF experts. The key learnings from this trip will help in the preparation of the Sochi 2014 Candidature File, should the city be selected as Candidate City by the IOC next June.

Bringing his unparalleled experience and perspective as a double Olympic ice-hockey champion, seven times World champion, ten times European champion and former Head of the Russian Olympic Hockey Team, Mr. Fetisov said Russia was well prepared to host the Games in 2014.

He said: “Major international events such as the IIHF World Championship, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, are incredibly valuable case studies for Sochi 2014. Russia as a nation is passionate about winter sports and enthusiastically participates in international competitions. We have significant experience hosting large-scale global winter events, but we are eager to enhance the Sochi 2014 Bid by looking at, and learning from, all important events of this nature.”

The trip is also an invaluable opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere of one of the greatest winter championships in a sport that is particularly close to Russians’ hearts.

Mr. Chernyshenko added: “We will use this trip to visit the competition venues, analyze the security needs and transport networks, inspect the accommodation capacities, and study urban planning, as well as its impact on the host city. Not only does the Tournament appear to be a great success, but we have observed several aspects that will help us in the preparation of our Candidature File. Above all, this event is also a fantastic opportunity to feel the unique and galvanizing atmosphere of an
ice-hockey world championship. Russians are particularly proud of the successes and achievements of the national hockey team. Watching so many great teams compete here in Riga at the highest level is further incentive for Sochi to host the greatest winter sports event of all – the Olympic Winter Games.”
