Sheffield Franchise Awarded
The Ice Hockey Superleague Ltd today (28th May) announced the award of the South Yorkshire Franchise - including Sheffield - to a new company, Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey Club Limited.
The Company is owned by a consortium led by local businessman Darren Brown, and significantly including share ownership by the fans and friends of Sheffield Steelers. The decision in considering supporter ownership is significant and may be unique in the ownership of sports clubs.
Ian Taylor, Chief Executive of the Ice Hockey Superleague said, 'I am delighted not only to end the uncertainty surrounding this franchise which the Superleague considers as one of its jewels, but also that the award for the franchise has gone to the Sheffield Community, who best know how to run this business.'
