Shanghai welcomes World Cup Wakeboard and Jump athletes from forty countries to Bihai Jinsha Water Park this weekend

Waterskiing - 29 Sep 2015

Joining over 9 million visitors at the spectacular Shanghai Tourism Festival, Cable Wakeboard & Jump World Cup Stop athletes from forty countries are now arriving for the October 3-4 competition. Located on the south side of Shanghai in the Fengxian District, the event will be staged at the Bihai Jinsha Water Park using the Rixen Cable system. The multi-national Festival Opening Parade competes with Rio’s Mardi Gras Carnival for spectacle. This sets the scene for the international Festival. Also included with the World Cup Stop are a gigantic Balloon Show, German Beer Festival, Music Fountain Display and Fireworks. This event follows last weekend’s successful Wakeboard World Cup event north of here in Linyi City.

With close to 90 affiliated Federations, the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) combined forces with the Chinese Water Ski Association and Shanghai Bihai Sands Investment Development, to stage the biggest Cable Wakeboard and Cable Jump event ever. With athletes from 40 countries taking their places, Shanghai audiences will have a unique opportunity to see the very best in the world compete in this 44th IWWF World Cup Stop.

For Cable Wakeboard, we rarely see so many world and national champions taking part in one single event. Twenty-nine year-old World Champion Lior Sofer (ISR) is at his peak right now and a hot favourite. He turned Pro in 2004, took the World Championships gold medal in Norway last year and the silver medal at the Europe Africa Cable Wakeboard Championships. This will be his first performance in Shanghai.  Korean star Im San and Germany’s Dominik Guhrs will be in strong contention.  Sanne Meijer (NED), at just 18 years of age, has had a sensational rise to fame. She has moved effortlessly from Dutch Champion to Europe Africa Champion to World Champion in little over three years. She too is a hot favourite for World Cup gold. Watch out also for Beijing World Cup Champion Maxine Sapulette (NED) and past World Champion Sophia Marie Reimers (GER), the first woman ever to land a Raley 540 on a Cable system.

For Jump, this World Cup Stop is part of the International Tour of Cableski (ITC). With IWWF World Champion Alexander Vasko (SVK) missing through injury, the hot favourite has to be Poland’s Krystof Bernatowicz. Currently in second place in ITC results this year, don’t be surprised if we see distances of over 60m achieved by him. He will be pushed hard by Kamil Borysewicz (POL) and Daniel Maltzahn (GER). For the Women Jumpers, super-star Joulia Meier-Gromyko (BLR) looks unbeatable. She has broken the World Record eleven times. One year ago here in Shanghai she again tied a new World Jump Record of 48.9m with Iryna Turets (BLR) who has returned to take up the challenge. Veronika Cseploova (SVK) is also a strong possibility.

With the Opening Ceremony in Bihai Jinsha Water Park scheduled for Friday October 2nd at 09.00hrs, the programme will continue with Saturday starting at 10.00hrs and Sunday at 09.00hrs. The Closing Ceremony is scheduled to take place on the nearby beachfront Amphitheatre at 15.15hrs.

Temperature of 29C / 84F and sunny skies with possible rain showers are forecasted for the weekend of October 3rd/4th at BiHai JinSha Water Park in Shanghai.
