Salzburg 2014 Delegation at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Moscow

Ice hockey - 11 May 2007

The Salzburg Olympic bid is sending a delegation, led by IOC member and President of the Austrian Olympic Committee Dr. Leo Wallner, and Executive Director of Salzburg 2014, Rudolf Hoeller, to the finals weekend at the 2007 Ice Hockey World Championship in Moscow. Leo Wallner and Rudolf Hoeller will use this opportunity to hold productive discussions with members of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and to listen to their desires and suggestions.

Austria last hosted the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2005, when total ticket sales of 82% showed that ice hockey is held dearly in Austria, and that the country’s location in the heart of Europe makes it easily accessible to great numbers of fans from the neighbouring ice hockey nations of the Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, etc.

Rudolf Hoeller, Executive Director of Salzburg 2014: “I have already had the pleasure of being in a position of responsibility when organising two Ice Hockey World Championships, and must say that they were both magnificent experiences, as ice hockey is a very exciting and spectacular sport. Here in Austria, ice hockey
is currently experiencing a big revival. Hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2014 in Salzburg would continue this trend. Thomas Vanek and Thomas Poeck, who both play in the NHL, are good examples of how even a small country can produce great players. However, this only works if players have
the appropriate training and match facilities. Building two new ice halls in Salzburg, within the framework of the 2014 Winter Games in Salzburg, would improve the ice sports infrastructure and provide a significant increase in training facilities for junior athletes.“
