Rugby League Claims World Cup Ratings Success

Rugby league - 14 Nov 2000

The Lincoln Financial Group World Cup has proved to be a major hit with terrestrial television viewers.

Last Saturday’s BBC Grandstand telecast of World Champions Australia’s quarter final clash with Samoa peaked at 3.2 million viewers which was one million more than the Rugby Union international meeting between Scotland and Australia the same day.

Sunday Grandstand’s screening of the Welsh quarter final victory over Papua New Guinea at Widnes attracted a peak audience of 1.8 million viewers.

Neal Coupland, the World Cup organising company’s Media and Marketing Director said: 'This magnificent response demonstrates that the Lincoln Financial Group World Cup has caught the imagination of the British public in spite of what the critics may say.

'We’re delighted that the tournament and the sport continue to attract support from the people who follow sport on television.'
