Rugby Football League to Review Fixture List
The Rugby Football League (RFL) is to re-evaluate the method of compiling the Super League regular season fixture list.
In partnership with the Super League clubs, the RFL will assess the current system which involves each club playing home and away once and then playing a further six games based on previous season's finishing positions.
Agreed changes to the system would be used to compile the 2005 Super League season fixture list.
Commenting on the situation, the RFL's Chief Operating Officer Nigel Wood said:
'The original system of fixture compilation was agreed by all Super League clubs and has been used for five years.
'It now appears that a club's final finishing position is being significantly and disproportionately affected by which section of the fixture list they are playing in.
'Given that two clubs could face relegation at the end of the 2005 season, we believe it would be inappropriate to continue with this current system'.
Wood added: 'The ultimate decision rests with the Super League clubs but the RFL will be making recommendations about a new system, which would see any repeat fixtures evenly distributed among all clubs'.
