Resignation of England Basketball's Kirkland Was Personal Choice
The following statement is to clarify the present position of England Basketball.
On May 4th 2002 Simon Kirkland was asked to lead the fundamental review implementation. To allow Simon to do this someone was needed to take over the day-to-day operations at Head Office. The Executive Board asked Laszlo Nemeth to take on this role and he has adopted a series of procedures to improve the communication and efficiency of the office.
On May 21st for reasons unconnected with the above Simon Kirkland resigned after four years as Chief Executive. This was a personal choice and one he had been considering for a while.
His involvement in the first phase of the implementation plan provided an opportunity for Simon to resign and ensure a smooth take over to the new CEO.
The Association has a tight cash position but is not insolvent. At the end of this financial year (May 31st), the Association will become majority owners of the Leeds Head Quarters, which will improve further the financial position.
The Association has been at pains to implement the results of the Sport England Management Audit carried out in 2000 and as a consequence has worked closely over a period of time with the Inland Revenue, HM Customs and the new auditors of England Basketball to achieve a true position. This has now been achieved and has satisfied all parties.
Sue Rivington, the Finance Manager for England Basketball also resigned last week and it needs to be stated that she has not resigned for financial reasons but for personal ones. Both the resignation of Simon and Sue should not be related to the statements made by the Association over the last week.
No Parallels with the recent situation of Hockey should be drawn, as England Basketball’s position is very different. The English Basketball Association wishes to apologies for any misconceptions caused.
