R&A Funding Support for Golf Development

Golf events and projects in countries ranging from Brazil to Zambia are set to benefit from a series of grants announced by The R&A. These include public golf courses and international amateur team events in four different continents for men, women and juniors.

In announcing the latest awards, Duncan Weir, The R&A’s Director of Golf Development said; 'The R&A is committed to promoting and developing golf both nationally and internationally through funding derived entirely from the annual surplus generated by The Open Championship. Many of these awards are part of ongoing programmes which can only contribute towards the worldwide advancement of golf.'

The awards include the following:

Africa Junior Golf Challenge
£10,000 towards 2005 international amateur team event to be played in Namibia.

Golfing Union of Ireland
£10,000 towards 2004 European Youths’ Amateur Team Championship played in Dublin.

Japeri Project in Brazil
£35,000 to enable course construction to be completed. £60,000 has already been contributed towards this first public golf course in Brazil.

Ladies European Tour
£75,000 towards the running of the Tour in 2004.

Lenana School Golf Facility
£10,000 towards construction of a school golf course in Kenya.

Putra Cup
£5,000 towards 2004 men’s international amateur team event played in Indonesia.

Royal Calcutta Golf Club
£25,000 towards new greenkeeping machinery. This club is currently celebrating its 175th anniversary and is one of the world’s oldest golf clubs outside Great Britain and Ireland.

Ruchill Community Golf Course
£25,000 towards course construction. This is a public project in inner Glasgow, Scotland.

South African Golf Association
£25,000 towards 2005 Zone VI men’s international amateur team event to be played in Sun City.

Zambia Ladies’ Golf Union
£10,000 towards 2005 ladies’ international amateur team competitions.
