Award for Rugby Football League Nurturing Programme

Rugby league - 06 Feb 2001

The Rugby Football League has collected a major award from Sportsmatch, the government sports sponsorship agency, for its work in development at grass root levels.

The Outstanding Contribution by Sport’ award citation from Sportsmatch recognised the RFL’s ‘nurturing of grass roots programmes throughout its sport’.

Sportsmatch officials made the trophy presentation at Rugby Football League’s headquarters in Leeds on Monday.

The RFL has benefited from funding of £1,796,138.00 from the Sportsmatch scheme since 1993 and they collected a record £477,953.00 during 2000.

Yorkshire Regional Development Manager Andy Harland, who led the team that was recognised by the award for its work in 1999-2000, said: 'The Sportsmatch funding has proved very effective for Rugby League and the programme’s excellent support has enabled us to drive forward some very important initiatives for the development of player and match official schemes.'
