Powergen Named as Sponsor of Rugby League Schools Tournament
Powergen was today announced as the title sponsor of the inaugural Rugby League Champion Schools Cup. The finals of the various age groups involved in the tournament will take place in Cardiff on the same weekend as the Powergen Challenge Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium on 26 April 2003.
With over 300 school teams and over 6,000 participants of all age groups from England, Scotland and Wales, the Powergen Champion Schools tournament is the largest knockout rugby league tournament in the UK and aimed at promoting rugby league within schools.
Ten teams, from five different age groups have made it through to their respective finals.
In addition to the Powergen Champion Schools tournament, Powergen is title sponsor of the Challenge Cup in a three-year deal and has also committed to sponsoring Rugby Football League Match Officials for at least a year.
This move to include the Powergen Champion Schools in their rugby league sponsorship portfolio highlights Powergen's commitment to the sport of rugby league at every level and the importance of grassroots support in the development of the game as a whole.
Mike Thompson, Powergen Sponsorship Manager, commented, 'We are very excited about our involvement in so many areas of rugby league and the support for the Champion Schools Tournament further demonstrates our commitment beyond the Powergen Challenge Cup and Rugby Football League Match Officials agreements. Grassroots activity is key for the further development of the game and we are pleased to be able to support the Rugby Football League in their activity.'
Andy Harland, Rugby Football League National Development Manager commented, 'We are delighted that Powergen has committed to title sponsorship of the Champion Schools Tournament. It is fantastic to have a sponsor who is so committed to developing the sport of rugby league at all stages and the Powergen Champion Schools is a real focus for development.'
