No Positive Doping Cases During WTTC in Bremen

Table tennis - 16 Jun 2006

ITTF is pleased to announce that all the samples collected during the Liebherr World Team Championships in Bremen were negative. Exactly 32 players were selected for testing during the prestigious tournament in Germany.

The terrific result adds to an impressive line of statistics as no positive doping cases has ever been recorded at ITTF Individual or Team Table Tennis World Championships. Doping testing in table tennis was introduced at the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships at Birmingham (ENG) in 1977 and was later re-established for the 1991 World Championships in Chiba (CHN).

In Bremen doping testing was carried out by NADA (National Anti-Doping Agency) Deutschland. All testing procedures during the tournament were supervised by chairman of the ITTF anti-doping panel, Dr. Jean-Francois Kahn as well as Dr. Michael Scott and Tyra Parkins who also sits on the panel. The samples were analyzed by two WADA accredited laboratories in Cologne and Dresden (20 in one and 12 in the other).

”We enjoyed a terrific co-operation with NADA Germany during the tournament in Bremen we are of course happy with the results which sustains the image of table tennis as a very healthy sport”, says Dr.Kahn.
