New Zealand Takes Rugby World Cup 2011 Bid To Next Stage
The NZRU Board agreed to support the bid proceeding to the next stage with the payment of a £25,000 deposit to Rugby World Cup Limited.
NZRU Chief Executive Chris Moller said the Rugby World Cup was the premier event in world rugby, and it has continued to grow both as a sporting event and as a major tourism and economic driver.
“We want to look at all options available to us in regards to the potential for New Zealand to host this tournament. While there are significant challenges in the scale and scope of the event, we believe that New Zealand may be able to lodge a competitive bid to host the Rugby World Cup again.”
Mr Moller said the NZRU would now consult with the New Zealand Government and its agencies with regards to the key requirements for a successful bid and hosting of the tournament.
“There are a range of details that require the involvement of both central and local Government in terms of delivering this event, ranging from immigration to security, transport and infrastructure, as well as funding.”
Mr Moller said the NZRU would work through the bid details with all of the key parties over the next few months.
The final bids are due to be submitted to Rugby World Cup Limited in May 2005.
