New Sponsor for Great Britain's Rugby League Team
NEW GREAT BRITAIN TEAM AND TEST SERIES SPONSOR ANNOUNCED
The Rugby Football League is delighted to confirm that the Department for Transport's (DfT) road safety campaign 'Think!.....Don't Drink Drive' is to sponsor the Great Britain team.
It is the first time a government awareness campaign has created a sponsorship link with an international representative side.
The sponsorship is a six figure deal for one year and will mean that the official title of the three Test series against the New Zealand Kiwis will be, ' The Think! Don't Drink Drive Test Series'. Also the tour itself will be known as, 'The Think! Don't Drink Drive Tour'.
Commenting on the new sponsorship, the Rugby Football League's Executive Chairman Richard Lewis said, 'We are delighted to enter into this partnership with the Department of Transport. The 'Think!...Don't Drink Drive' campaign is an extremely important initiative and the Great Britain team and this exciting international tour will give it a tremendously increased profile.'
Lewis added, 'As a sport Rugby League has always prided itself on its social responsibility and this partnership is a tremendous way of both illustrating this and promoting the anti drink drive message.'
David Jamieson, Road Safety Minster said: 'This is a great opportunity to give our support to the Great Britain Rugby League team and helps broaden our message on road safety to a large and wide audience.
'Many people take a great interest in the rugby league team and having Think! on their shirts will give excellent exposure and a unique profile to our road safety message.
'With nearly 10 drink-drive related deaths and 345 injuries each and every week – it is vital that we keep up the pressure on motorists who continue to drink and drive. Despite being aware of the dangers a small minority of drivers don’t listen to the advice. Not only are these reckless drivers breaking the law and facing a £5000 fine - they are risking their own lives and those of other road users.'
As part of the agreement with the Department of Transport, an anti drink drive policy will be included in contracts for players, managers, coaches and staff of all Rugby Football League representative teams. The policy will also be circulated as an addendum to employment contracts for the all Rugby Football League staff.
The sponsorship deal also means that the DfT's road safety logo 'Think!' will appear on the front of the Great Britain squad's shirts. Also the Think! Don't Drink Drive message will be hugely prominent throughout the tour on all pitch and stadium dressing materials.
The DfT campaign Think! Don't Drink Drive campaign aims to target males aged between 18 and 35 and all drivers not just in the lead up to the Christmas season but year round and rugby league provides an ideal platform.
