New Chief Executive for Australian Basketball
The National Basketball League today announced the appointment of former Adelaide 36ers’ captain and 1980 Olympian Peter Ali as Chief Executive Officer.
Ali brings a wealth of basketball and business acumen to the post, and he joins the league during one of the most exciting periods in its 23-year history.
'Basketball in Australia is in the midst of significant and meaningful change, with the basketball community embracing the One Basketball concept,' NBL Chairman John Harvey said today. 'Peter Ali brings all the elements to the office that we have been seeking, having proved himself both on the basketball court and as a leading sport’s administrator.
'Peter will work closely with our member clubs, with our key corporate partners and with the other major basketball bodies as we continue the drive to unify the sport of basketball to ensure the ongoing success of the world’s most widely played sport.
'With the sport moving forward we know that Peter is the person to continue the momentum that has been developed in recent years. The NBL has experienced substantial growth in the past five years, with improved corporate support, record television audiences and increased attendance across all states.
'One Basketball ensures that all areas of the sport are working in unison for the first time, and the future success of both the NBL and basketball in Australia is as bright as at any time.'
Ali is naturally looking forward to the new challenges that await, and today expressed his desire to take up his new position.
'Having enjoyed such a strong involvement with the NBL as both a player and an administrator, this obviously means a great deal,' Ali said today. 'Basketball has embarked on a major restructure, and the NBL is a key player in this process. I am looking forward to making the move to Sydney and getting straight into the role.
'The league has enjoyed substantial growth and success, and we will build on this momentum. The season is not far away, with the NBL Blitz set for the first week of October and the NBL season getting under way on October 11th, and like all associated with basketball I can’t wait for this next exciting phase to begin.'
Ali has spent the past two years as General Manager of Netball South Australia and ETSA Park, and in that time he has implemented a number of initiatives to increase the productivity and profitability of the organisation.
Peter had spent the previous 19 years in a variety of roles with the Basketball Association of South Australia (BASA). His portfolio includes the role of Operations Manger, Commercial Manager, Facilities Manager and Director of Coaching. Peter was BASA’s point man on the negotiation and erection of the Clipsal Powerhouse, South Australia’s pre-eminent indoor sports and entertainment facility.
Ali played 279 games with West Adelaide Bearcats and the Adelaide 36ers in a career that spanned 12 seasons. He was captain of West Adelaide’s 1982 championship team and of the 36ers’ record breaking 1986 championship squad.
Peter’s outstanding playing ability was recognised by the national selectors, as he proudly wore the green and gold 17 times between 1975 and 1981, highlighted by his selection in the Australian team for the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
It is anticipated that Ali will commence at the NBL in early August.
