New Balance Renews Modern Pentathlon Sponsorship

Modern pentathlon - 28 Jun 2001
Monaco and Boston – The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), announced today that New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. renewed its four-year sponsorship of the sport until the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. New Balance has been a worldwide sponsor of modern pentathlon since 1995. With the renewal of this sponsorship, New Balance will continue to have a major presence in all modern pentathlon World Cups and World Championships.

'New Balance is proud to support the UIPM, this exciting sport and its athletes, who are considered the most complete athletes of the Olympic Games,' says Jim Davis, Chairman and CEO of New Balance. 'Modern Pentathlon – comprising the five disciplines of shooting, fencing, swimming, show jumping and running - showcases each individual athlete’s physical skill, strength and endurance.'

All five disciplines of modern pentathlon are contested in one day. The sport was first staged as a men’s event at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games. Women competed in the Olympic Modern Pentathlon for the first time at the Sydney 2000 Games. The worldwide popularity of modern pentathlon continues to increase as evidenced by the sell-out crowds on both days of intense competition at the Sydney 2000 Games. 'Looking forward to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens,' UIPM President Klaus Schormann says, 'Pentathlon will celebrate its homecoming 2,712 years after Lampis of Sparta won the first Olympic Pentathlon. To mark the occasion, UIPM will stage cultural events in Athens over the next three years and during the 2004 Athens Games.'

John Helmick, UIPM Vice President and Chairman of the Business Affairs Committee, who is responsible for establishing the relationship with New Balance says, 'New Balance produces athletic wear for people of all ages participating in a diverse range of sports and outdoor activities. This makes them an ideal sponsor for the multifaceted sport of Pentathlon.'
