NASN to Broadcast World Cup of Hockey in UK and Ireland
NASN (North American Sports Network) will broadcast exclusive coverage in the UK and Ireland of this summer’s World Cup of Hockey 2004, including live broadcasts of all the significant games and the final on 14 September – that’s over 50 hours of world class ice hockey on NASN this summer.
The World Cup of Hockey features eight of the world’s top ice hockey nations competing in the second World Cup ever held, this summer. From August 30th until September 14th, spanning two continents, NASN will have coverage from both the North American and the European pools with the best games including the final shown live. The World Cup of Hockey will also see NASN’s first ever live transmissions from Europe.
It has been eight years since the US hoisted the first ever World Cup of Hockey trophy in 1996 - they subsequently won silver in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and bronze in the recent World Championships – so they will be searching for gold this time around. First of all they will have to battle their way through the North American pool which also includes 2002 Olympic Gold Medalists and this year’s World Champions Canada, as well as Russia and Slovakia. The four teams based in Europe are the Czech Republic, winners of the 1998 Olympic gold medal, Finland, Germany and Sweden.
The World Cup of Hockey is the closest international event to NHL hockey, featuring NHL players, NHL size rinks and professional NHL referees. The Air Canada Centre in Toronto – home of the world famous Toronto Maple Leafs - will be the site for the final. NASN will also be broadcasting games from North America and Europe including Helsinki, Stockholm, Cologne, Prague, Montreal and St Paul, Minnesota.
Rosters will consist of 23 skaters and three goaltenders with the players being announced by the end of May. Goaltending will be the key to success at the World Cup, with a host of NHL stars lining up to represent their national sides.
