Major League Baseball Appoints Expos Management

Baseball - 13 Feb 2002

Major League Baseball, whose acquisition of the Montreal Expos was approved by ownership today, announced a leadership group of experienced professionals that will operate the Expos on and off the field.

Tony Tavares, who formerly operated the Anaheim Angels as president of Anaheim Sports, Inc., has been named the club president, while Omar Minaya will serve as vice-president and general manager, Frank Robinson as field manager, and Claude Delorme as executive vice-president, business affairs.

Tavares will prepare a budget to be submitted to MLB, consistent with past club budgets, and will have complete and independent operating control over the club and the budget.

'I am very pleased with the management team that we have assembled,' said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. 'They have long experience in the game and they are first rate in every way. Now that they are in place, they will have the authority to operate the club with complete autonomy.'

Although this is Minaya's first posting as a major league general manager, he brings nearly 17 years of big league experience as a scout and assistant general manager to the Expos. Most recently, he served as the senior assistant general manager of the New York Mets. Before joining the Mets in 1997, he was the director of professional scouting for the Texas Rangers, beginning in 1985.

Robinson, of course, is a baseball legend. He is a Hall-of-Fame outfielder whose 586 career home runs ranks fourth on the all-time list behind Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, and Willie Mays. Also, he made baseball history in 1975 when he managed the Cleveland Indians, becoming the game's first minority manager. Robinson also managed the San Francisco Giants and Baltimore Orioles. He joined the Commissioner's Office two years ago and served as MLB's vice-president of on-field affairs and primarily dealt with on-field disciplinary issues.

In addition to operating the Angels, Tavares, as president of Anaheim Sports, Inc., also operated the NHL's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He served as president of the Angels for six years and during his tenure spearheaded the effort to renovate Anaheim Stadium from a multi-purpose facility to a baseball-only ballpark.

Delorme, previously vice-president of development and stadium operations for the Expos, has been with the club nearly 19 years. Since joining the Expos in 1983 as assistant director of game services, he consistently rose through the ranks and has overseen such diverse operations as game operations, spring training facilities, tickets, catering services, concessions, and corporate services.
