Athletes Benefiting From Financial Aid Programe Deliver

University sports - 17 Aug 2007

Bangkok, August 16th - So far, five medals have been won at the Universiade by athletes of countries that benefit from the FISU/UBOC Financial Aid Programme.

The Financial Aid Programme exists since 1987. For the 1987 Summer Universiade in Zagreb, the International Olympic Committee granted financial help to the LOC, to encourage participation of the emerging countries to the Universiade. This was the first step in developing a specific aid programme for these countries which was set up four years later. In 1991, at the Universiade of Sheffield, FISU awarded the first financial aid to the emerging countries. This programme, with a budget of 100,000 USD, was coupled with the efforts made by the Organising Committees to assist a larger number of countries participating at the Universiade.

Since launching this aid programme, it was agreed that FISU would take care of the member associations, whilst the OC would cover the aid to the non-member associations of FISU. It was also decided that priority would be given to countries with an annual income ‘per capita' of less than 2,000 USD. The financial aid scheme proposed by FISU consists of taking care of the travel costs, inscription fee and accommodation of 2 athletes (1 male & 1 female) and an official for each team invited.
