Korea Achievement in the 2007 Ice Hockey World Championships-Division 2 Highlights Korea’s Winter Sport Strengths

South Korea achievement in the finals of the 2007 Ice Hockey World Championships Division 2 which held in Seoul from 2 to 8 April led to be raised to Division 1.

In this event which 5 countries including South Korea, Israel, Mexico, Iceland and Australia participated, South Korea swept the four games and succeeded in having been raising to Division 1 for the first time in four years since 2003.

Especially, Korea Ice hockey team has achieved good results in the international event such as Korea’s winning a bronze medal in men’s ice hockey at the Asian Winter Games in Changchun, China in January this year, for the first time in 17 years after 1990 Sapporo Asian Winter Games, with the promotion to Division 1

Korea athletes recently have presented great results in figure skating, short track, and speed skating competitions which attract large number of spectators. These results are expected to provide a huge boost for the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games bidding and enthusiasm for winter sports 

Kim Jin Sun, Governor of Gangwon province and Executive President of the PyeongChang Bid Committee said: “We congratulate the Korean team’s victory in the ice hockey competition. Koreans’ outstanding achievements at the recent winter sports are very inspiring to us all and have helped to promote and expand winter sports across Korea and Asia as well.”

Korea has been promoted to the Ice Hockey Division 1 Championships, which is the lower level than the Hockey World Championship including; 16 world-class countries. All 12 countries belong to the Division 1 Championships and the winners of two groups at the Division 1 championships are promoted to next year's Ice Hockey World Championships.
