Sailing - 21 Oct 2003

20th October 2003. The GEM Group has been appointed by BG Group, a leading player in the global energy market, to maximise benefit from BG Group’s yacht sponsorship in the fourth Global Challenge yacht race, which begins in September 2004. GEM won the business in a six-way pitch.

GEM will project manage the sponsorship on behalf of BG Group in addition to handling the PR and marketing strategy for the two year programme. GEM will also assist in coordinating sponsorship activity for BG Group’s internal markets around the world including the ports of call during the race itself.

The Global Challenge is the leading amateur Round the World Yacht Race, taking 12 boats, each with one professional sailor and 17 amateur crew volunteers, 30,000 miles the ‘wrong way’ around the world. The race starts and finishes in the UK’s marine capital, Portsmouth, and over the 10 month period involves stopovers in Boston, Buenos Aires, Wellington, Sydney, Cape Town and La Rochelle.

Commenting on GEM’s appointment, BG Group Head of Marketing, Sara Sizer said: 'We were very impressed with GEM’s sailing credentials, their knowledge of the Global Challenge event and understanding of our objectives and needs from the sponsorship.'

The GEM team will be headed up by Account Director, Grace Harding who said: 'This is a wonderful appointment for GEM and further strengthens our sailing credentials. It is a two year project which is ideal for developing and implementing initiatives specifically tailored to meet BG Group’s needs in territories all over the world.'

GEM also works on the following sailing sponsorship projects, GBR Challenge, Portuguese America’s Cup bid, Sailability Admirals Cup Team and the Nautor’s Swan sailing programme.
