Froehlich Elected Chairman of USA Gymnastics Board

Gymnastics - 15 Dec 2000

At the recent USA Gymnastics Board of Directors meeting in Indianapolis, new board members were named following the results of an election. Additionally, new officers were chosen by members of the board to serve through 2004.

Ron Froehlich (Birmingham, Ala.), President of the International Trampoline Federation (FIT) from 1990-1998, was elected Chairman of the Board. Bill Hybl (Colorado Springs, Colo.), President Emeritus of the U.S. Olympic Committee, and Bob Wood (Midland, Mich.), Business President of The Dow Chemical Company, were elected public sector directors. In addition, Wood was also named treasurer. Gary Anderson (Olney, Md.) was elected Secretary. New vice-chairs were elected to the women's and trampoline programs and two national membership representatives for each discipline were determined.

'My goal as chairman is to support our athletes and to regain world standings in all FIG events,' said Froehlich. 'I look forward to working with the staff on our membership initiatives as well as continuing the positive relationships that USA Gymnastics has established with the U.S. Olympic Committee, the NCAA and other constituent organizations.'

Froehlich, originally from South Africa, has over 36 years experience in sports administration. He is a member of the IOC Program Commission for Athens 2004. He is also an Executive Board Member for the FIG and has been on the Executive Committee for USA Gymnastics since 1999. Froehlich was a member of the IOC Commission for the Promotion of the Olympic Movement in 1998 and 1999. From 1974-1990, Froehlich served as General Secretary of the FIT and served as Vice President of the South African Gymnastics Federation from 1966-1976.

Froehlich replaces Sandy Knapp as chairman who served since 1992. He resides in Birmingham, Ala., with his wife and two children.

'I’d like to thank Sandy Knapp for her dedication to USA Gymnastics,' said Colarossi. 'She truly made a difference in our organization and we wish her well. Sandy continues to be a vital member of the Olympic family and we look forward to working with her on future projects.'

Tom Koll (Omaha, Neb.) and Paul Parilla (Lake Forest, Calif.) were named vice-chairmen for the women's program and trampoline program, respectively. Vice-chairmen sit on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. Tim Daggett of the men's program and Wendy Hilliard of the rhythmic program are vice-chairs through 2001.
