Ansett Problems Lead to Australian Basketball Delay

Basketball - 24 Sep 2001

The National Basketball League has delayed making a decision on whether to proceed with the upcoming NBL Blitz pre-season tournament until the close of business on Tuesday September 25.

The NBL Blitz is scheduled to be held between October 5-7 in Townsville and Cairns, but significant logistical problems have arisen following the grounding of Ansett.

The NBL recently signed an agreement with Ansett alongside Basketball Australia, the Women’s National Basketball League, and the Australian Basketball Association.

NBL Chief Executive Peter Ali said that with the rapid changes in the airline industry over the last few days, the decision on whether to proceed with the tournament was delayed in order to get a clearer picture of how they will affect the NBL Blitz.

'We are holding intensive and extensive discussions with the airlines, and it is in the interests of the NBL Blitz that we delay any decision on the tournament until Tuesday.' Ali said.
