French Rugby League Clubs Can Take Cup Home Advantage
Following talks between Greg McCallum, the Rugby League’s Director of Rugby, and representatives of the French Federation in London yesterday, French clubs are to be allowed to take home advantage from the Silk Cut Challenge Cup in 2002.
Currently, French clubs always travel to play in Britain even if they are drawn with home advantage in the draw.
McCallum said: 'This is a crucial time for the French game and we are anxious to give them every support. The decision to allow them home advantage in Challenge Cup ties is a significant breakthrough not only for French Rugby League but for the sport as a whole.'
McCallum also discussed at length the French view of the domestic international programme. At the moment McCallum is putting the finishing touches to the fixture programme for 2001. For the home nations as well as the proposed tour by Australia at the end of the season.
He added: 'We made great progress with our French colleagues and we expect to make an announcement about the whole programme in the next few weeks.'
McCallum also announced that the Anglo-French referee exchange programme was to be reviewed. Following the success of Thierry Alibert in the Lincoln Financial Group Rugby League World Cup it has now been agreed to restore the exchange visits and it is expected that two French referees will visit the UK later this month as part of the scheme.
