Familiar Partners Unite to Extend FIVB World Grand Prix TV Coverage

Volleyball - 07 Sep 2006

Today sees the start of the FIVB World Grand Prix Final Round from Reggio Calabria, Italy.

The FIVB World Grand Prix is the most prestigious annual Women’s Volleyball Tournament, sanctioned by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). This high profile competition, which started three weeks ago, now comprises only the six finest teams on the Women’s National Team Volleyball Circuit.

The magnificent resort town of Reggio Calabria in Southern Italy provides a fitting climax to what is now a well-established fixture in the World Volleyball Calendar.

A familiar partnership, in FIVB and its long-serving TV Agency, IEC in Sports, once again reunite to serve Volleyball at its best to fans from all corners of the globe.

The 2006 edition of the competition sees the most extensive television coverage ever, with more than 150 countries accessing footage from the event. Live distribution across Europe, Middle East, Asia, North and South America make the 2006 FIVB World Grand Prix available to sports fans all over the world.

“FIVB, as the world’s largest sports federation, is delighted to be able to provide a distribution commensurate with the size and global appeal of our sport”, commented Dr. Rubén Acosta H., President of FIVB.

“Our partnership with IEC now stems back many years and thanks to a very close co-operation with the agency, we have now reached an unparalleled level of television exposure for the Event”, continued Acosta.

“We are greatly pleased to have again managed to extend the distribution of the FIVB World Grand Prix. This is a testament to the excellent organization of FIVB and to the considerable experience our partnership has generated over the years”, commented Jonas Persson, CEO of IEC in Sports.

During the first three weeks of the competition, staged in Japan, Poland, Hong Kong, Macau, Chinese Taipei, Korea, Thailand and China, the teams battled it out for a place in the Final Round.

World Champions, Italy, Olympic Champions China and defending 5-time Champions, Brazil lead the way with Olympic Runners-up, Russia, former World Champions, Cuba and the rapidly improving Japan making up the impressive Final Six.

Today’s first matches from the Final Round see the two 3-team pools commence battle with China, Cuba and Italy in Pool A and Brazil, Russia and Japan in Pool B. Teams will play off against one another in Pool Play with Saturday seeing the Semi-Finals featuring the two best teams in each group and Sunday witnessing the decisive matches to determine the FIVB World Grand Prix Champions.
