European Hockey League Suspended For The 2000/01 season

Ice hockey - 24 Feb 2000

Following consultation with the commercial partner, CWL Holding AG, the IIHF decided to suspend the running of the European Hockey League for the season 2000/01. Despite the conspicuous financial investment and the growing success of the League in terms of average calibre of the games,
attention from the media and from the spectators, the penetrationthrough the TV network in the European territories can not be regarded for the time being as satisfactory.

In order to guarantee an optimal exposure of the League in the European territories starting from the 2001/02 season, the IIHF will begin immediate consultation with the European broadcasters.

An international club competition, in the tradition of the previous European Cup, will be staged by the IIHF in the 2000/01 season.
