England Basketball Hit by Airline Collapse
With Sabena Airlines going into liquidation and the resultant difficulties experienced since September 11th England Basketball have been severely affected by these actions, in the doubling and in some cases, trebling of flight costs for the impending international games.
Flights to Italy returning to England and then on again to the Czech Republic have escalated due to the lack of competitive airline prices. As some of the players are in Belgium the Sabena collapse has further compounded the difficulties in assembling the teams for the forthcoming
internationals.
England Basketball's Chief Executive, Simon Kirkland
said 'We constantly battle with trying to get the best flights for players and seeking the best value for money however, our itinerary and the current world airline situation has meant considerable time being spent and extra expenditure used to ensure that our players do not have
gruelling travel arrangements.'
Dr Laszlo Nemeth, National Teams Coach, added 'These are performance athletes and we have worked very hard to ensure that their best interests are taken care of within the prescribed budget. The itinerary of away game venues has not helped the situation with Italy and the Czech Republic placing of the games a long distance from major
airports.'
England's Starlight Campaign with an away game against Italy on 21st November followed by a home game in Slovenia on Saturday 24th then travelling to the Czech Republic for an away tie on 28th November.
